It seems (at least in mma) that everyone is a black belt but never a second degree etc. I’ve read it takes at least three years in between degrees. I also read that Matt Serra received his black belt eight years ago but I still hear him referred to as a black belt in jujutsu. Anyone have any info on this?

At black belt you can give out ranks to others and then it is only time in rank and if it is awarded that it is received. Also, many BJJ black belts do not ever put the stripes on their belts even if they go up in rank.

There are alot of multiple degree black belts in MMA (BJ Penn, Demian Maia, Jacare, like all of the Gracie’s, and so many more) there is no rarity in that, they just say black belt because who the heck memorizes EVERYONES different stripes, what announcers know is who has a black belt not what degree
